My experience includes work in the private sector as a paper broker and the public sector as the recycling coordinator for the City of San Jose California. Also several years in industrial sales as the regional sales rep for Pellenc ST a European mfg. of optical scanners. A unique incite into the recycling industry is gathered from this broad experience. Selling optical Scanners from France in Texas, getting to a 64% recycling rate for the City of San Jose prior to the year 2000, without mandating. These stories can be entertaining and informative. How did we get where we are today with China refusing to purchase our recyclables? What is an infrastructure assessment and why do cities need them. Why is measuring diversion using "garbage per capita" easier and more effective at improving the quality and quantity of recyclables? What does Garbage per Capita have in common with water and energy conservation? How can a city most effectively achieve zero-waste? Hint: Measure the waste! I gave a talk recently on recycling through time and space for an international software company - for Earth Day. Stories were shared on how recycling got started and when everything began getting dumped into a hole in the ground. I also shared the answer to the question - how far is "away" if we throw everything away. SETI shared the answer of where the nearest life forms may be if we throw this planet away. Look forward to hearing from you.

Watching an industry evolve from punched cards to AI has been a joy. Watching it devolve from valuing multiple competencies to turning competencies into org structures and silos brought me great sadness. It's time to focus on the human side of organizations and what sets them up for success. Understanding our purpose, elevating the importance of values and principles, and creating a relentless focus on creating value for those our orgs exist to serve, is how we can elevate the digital revolution into a human-centered one. My goal is to help people and organizations focus on their collective purpose.
