Many professionals dream of sharing their expertise and stories with an audience, whether at industry conferences, corporate workshops, or local events. However, the idea of pursuing a speaking career might seem daunting, especially if you’re already working full-time. The good news? You can launch a successful speaking side hustle without leaving your day job. Here’s how to get started on your journey to becoming a speaker, balancing it with your full-time role.
The first step is to clarify what makes your speaking unique. What expertise, insights, or personal stories can you share that would benefit others? Identify your niche and define your unique value proposition. For example, maybe you’re a marketing professional with innovative digital strategies or a healthcare worker with valuable patient care insights.
Once you know your niche, tailor your content to solve specific challenges for your target audience. This clarity will set you apart and make it easier to pitch yourself to event organizers.
Tip: Try testing your ideas on colleagues or friends to see what resonates. This feedback can help you refine your message and make it audience-centered.
To ease into speaking, start by presenting to smaller audiences or within familiar settings. This could include offering workshops at your workplace, speaking at local networking events, or even delivering virtual presentations. These opportunities are fantastic for refining your content, building confidence, and gathering feedback before moving to larger audiences.
Pro Tip: Recording these sessions can help you evaluate your delivery and identify areas for improvement. It also allows you to build a portfolio of recorded talks that can showcase your skills to potential clients.
A professional speaker portfolio helps you promote your speaking services. This doesn’t need to be a full website at first. Start with a concise one-sheet or online portfolio that highlights your expertise, speaking topics, and past experience. Make sure it also includes your contact information so event organizers can easily reach you.
One advantage of launching a speaking side hustle while working full-time is that you already have a network of industry connections. Let people in your field know that you’re available for speaking engagements, either through your company’s platform, on LinkedIn, or in professional groups.
Offer to speak at industry events that your company or colleagues are involved in. Not only does this help you gain exposure, but it also strengthens your credibility as a professional and a speaker.
Balancing your job with a speaking side hustle means you’ll need to be intentional with your time. Dedicate specific hours for preparation, whether that’s practicing your speech, creating slides, or researching new speaking techniques. This practice is essential for delivering a polished and impactful presentation.
Time-Saving Tip: Block off a couple of hours each week to work on your speaking goals. Treat this time as non-negotiable, just like a meeting. Consistency will help you improve your skills over time without overwhelming you.
